The Linguistic Turn: A Primer

Wittgenstein The Later

We’re speaking about the linguistic turn in the way of the linguistic turn. It began perhaps with Nietzsche or Husserl, but crystallized in the work of Wittgenstein and then developed along unique but complementary lines through the work of both American pragmatists and analytic philosopher (John Dewey, William James, et al), and continental philosophers and deconstructionists (Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Francois Lyotard, et al.). The turn has since become popularized (or made infamous) by Richard Rorty, an apostate of the American analytic tradition.

Moving quickly to the meat of the turn, we need only look at two quotes from Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations:

For a large class of cases—though not for all—in which we employ the word ‘meaning’ it can be defined thus: the meaning of a word is its use in the language. (Part I, section 43)

We must do away with all explanation, and description alone must take its place. (Part I, section 109)
